Borderlands 4 Gameplay Footage Will Debut at The Game Awards

We’re getting our first look at gameplay footage for the next entry in the Borderlands franchise later this week at The Game Awards.

Randy Pitchford, co-founder of developer Gearbox Software, revealed the news this morning on his X, formerly known as Twitter, account.

The popular looter shooter franchise is great despite having some weak points.

After teasing a new trailer, Pitchford later confirmed that we’ll see “a lot of in-game footage” as well as a never-before-seen original cinematic sequence. The cinematic takes place halfway between the end of Borderlands 3 and the start of Borderlands 4, so it should give us a hint as to where the story is headed.

The Current State of the Borderlands Franchise

Borderlands 4 was announced earlier this year at Gamescom with a planned release date of 2025. Its timing was a little unfortunate, though, as it came off the heels of the Borderlands movie flopping at the box office.

Based on Pitchford’s announcement, the game’s story is expected to follow the events of 2019’s Borderlands 3. The most recent entries in the series, 2022’s Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and New Tales from the Borderlands, are both spin-offs. However, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland features the traditional looter-shooter gameplay fans know and love. New Tales from the Borderlands is a story-driven adventure game that is more in line with games like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us from Telltale Games.

Last month, Gearbox flew in a terminally ill fan to give him a chance to play Borderlands 4 early. 37-year-old Caleb McAlpine posted on Reddit that he had two years left to live and wanted to play Borderlands 4. Gearbox made his dream come true. Regarding his experience with the game, McAlpine said, “We got to play what they have for Borderlands 4 so far, and it was amazing. I don’t know if I will be around when the game comes out, but I just want to say thank you to all of you for all of your love and support and for helping in making this happen. It truly was an amazing experience and it was just awesome.”

Publisher Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick expects Borderlands 4 to be released on their fiscal calendar for 2025, but he wants to keep it three months away from Grand Theft Auto VI, which is currently penciled in for Fall 2025. That means we can possibly see Borderlands 4 in the first half of the year or sometime in the holiday release window.
